How do I clean my STYLESEAL mask?

Your STYLESEAL mask can be washed by hand, but not in a washing machine.  Use regular soap or detergent, and wash gently. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the materials together. The masks are made of fine fabrics and designed to be lightweight and comfortable to wear.

We recommend you wash your mask every time you change the filters. To clean your mask, simply:

1. Remove the old filters
2. Gently hand wash the mask in soap water
3. Rinse in plain water
4. Hang to dry
5. Replace with new mask filters

Some people ask if they can use alcohol spray on the mask. If you do so, it’s important to not spray on the inside, as this could loosen the glue that holds the Velcro rings for the filters. We recommend using soap and water as the best way to clean the mask.

What is an exhalation valve and do I need one?

Most exhalation valves are a one-way check valve installed on higher-end face masks and respirators. They allow the exhaled air to quickly exit through the valve, but close during inhalation so the all the inhaled air passes through the filter. When the user inhales, the flow of the air pulls the pliable silicone rubber diaphragm shut so all the air passes through the filter. When the user exhales, the flow of air pushes the valve open, so the exhaled air can escape the mask sooner. The exhalation valve’s function is to reduce uncomfortable heat and humidity plus unhealthy CO2 (carbon dioxide) buildup inside the mask.

A mask with an exhaust valve will feel more comfortable and less hot than a mask without a valve.

The CO2 in the exhaled air is nearly 100 times more than that of the inhaled air.  You do not want to re-breathe your exhaled CO2. The exhalation valve allows the exhaled air to get out of the mask much faster.  The exhaled CO2 can increase even more during strenuous activity, so having an exhalation valve is especially important when you are exercising.

Exhalation valves are a very beneficial and inexpensive addition to your mask.  However, during Covid, exhalation valves were banned because the exhaled air passed through the valve and not the filter.  This did not provide any protection for those nearby from the mask wearer if they were sick.

SMART VALVE is a unique patent pending exhalation valve that performs the same function as other exhalation valves, but also offers the ability for the wearer to close the SMART VALVE so that the exhaled air passes through the filter.  By closing the SMART VALVE, the wearer can then protect those nearby when they are in close proximity such as in airplanes, trains, elevators, and other similar situations. The wearer could be contagious and not know it. The wearer can then open the SMART VALVE when others are no longer nearby, so the wearer is more comfortable and healthy.

Are air pollution masks effective?

Yes, they are. At least three scientific studies have looked at the effectiveness of face masks for protection against air pollution.

One study found that face masks filter between 14% and 96% of PM2.5, depending on the brand and type of mask. The average filtering capability of all the masks was 48%.

Another study revealed that most face masks are effective at filtering pollution, but vary significantly in how much they leak. The leak inside the masks varied between 3% and 68%, again depending on brand and model. The researchers concluded that the most important factor for mask effectiveness is how well the mask fits the face and is able to seal off particles. ALL STYLESEAL masks come in multiple sizes, adjustable ear loops, and with dual-wire nosepieces to ensure a tight seal. The PRO mask offers 2 dual-wire nose pieces for an even tighter seal.

A third study compared regular particle filtering masks with masks that included active carbon layers. Results showed that
face masks with active carbon are more effective than regular masks at filtering toxic gasses, such as nitrogen and sulfur dioxide.

Do face masks protect me from viruses?

Using a face mask can block most droplets from other people’s sneezes and coughs from entering your mouth and nose, according to infectious disease experts, but that depends on the type of mask you wear and how well you wear it.

Be sure to use a mask that fits and seals well. Because surgical masks aren’t fitted or sealed, they leave gaps around the mouth, so you’re not filtering all the air that comes in.

If you are infected with a virus and are using a standard exhalation valve, then seal the valve outlet on the inside of the mask with our valve covers to minimize the spread of the virus. Better yet, change to our PRO, AIR+ or EZ masks with SMART VALVE that offer a valve that can be turned on or off.

Be aware that no mask can guarantee 100% protection against infections. We recommend everyone practice social distancing and safe hygiene.

Which PRO and AIR+ mask filters should I use?

STYLESEAL PRO and AIR+ Mask Filters

The PRO and AIR+ lines of filters are made of the same materials and have equivalent filtering characteristics.  The sizes of the PRO and AIR+ filters are slightly different so PRO filters should be used in PRO masks, as well as PENUMBRA and UMBRA PRO UV face shields.  Below is a brief explanation of the filter category differences and you can refer to the comparison chart shown.

PRO/AIR+ SAFE filters offer the highest filtration and protection against all airborne hazards. These filters meet the KN95 mask standard.   PRO/AIR+ SAFE filters are the best choice for high levels of pollution and when you need maximum protection.

PRO/AIR+ FLOW filters offer easier breathing than the PRO/AIR+ SAFE and good protection against airborne hazards. The filters meet the new US ASTM F3502 standard (rated B2 for breathability, and F2 for filtration efficiency).

PRO/AIR+ COOL are the most breathable filters we offer and conform to the ASTM F2100 (medical mask) standard.  Choose the PRO/AIR+ COOL when you want maximum breathability and comfort.  Good for day-to-day use when hazards are not high.

How often should I change the mask filters?

STYLESEAL PRO & AIR+ Mask Filters
Filter life can vary based on many factors such as the level of pollution, temperature and humidity, your activity level, and more.

The PRO and AIR+ mask filters can last up to 4 weeks in mild conditions, but we recommend you change them every 2 weeks or so. The soft inner foam liner helps extend the life of the filters since they do not touch the face, so they are not affected by perspiration.  Also, change the filters if they look dirty, smell bad, become wet or if breathing becomes hard.

STYLESEAL original AIR Masks Filters
How often you need to change the AIR mask filters depends on how much you use them. We recommend you change them every 1 to 2 weeks.

Also, change filters if they get wet, look very dirty, or are difficult to breathe through.

As the filters get clogged with pollution, they become harder to breathe through. You can usually see this, as the filters become increasingly grey. Fresh filters are easier to breathe through and provide higher protection.

What do carbon filters do?

Activated carbon is carbon that has been treated with oxygen. This causes millions of tiny pores to open up on the carbon’s surface. Once carbon has been activated, it can absorb and remove many chemicals from the air, including the main gas-based pollutants:

Ozone (O3)
Carbon monoxide (CO)
Sulfur dioxide (SO2)
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)

Ordinary particle filters without carbon cannot absorb gasses. On the other hand, carbon cannot filter particle pollution (PM2.5). This is why a combination of particle and carbon filters work best, such as the STYLESEAL 80+CARBON, 90+CARBON, 95+CARBON, and 99+CARBON filters.

Carbon filters are especially useful in city environments, where there is a lot of traffic exhaust and other chemical fumes. Carbon filters also help remove smells and odors, which can make breathing more pleasant.

Note: Carbon filters are not yet available for the STYLESEAL PRO or AIR+ masks. Coming soon!!

What are the benefits of using the SMART VALVE?

SMART VALVE is a very beneficial and inexpensive addition to your mask.  Many of the reasons why are below:

  • SMART VALVE reduces heat and humidity, making mask-wearing more comfortable
  • SMART VALVE reduces CO2 retention inside the mask, which is much healthier for the wearer. CO2 retention causes CO2 narcosis from rebreathing previously exhaled air.
  • Protect those nearby.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Easy to use.
  • Reduces condensation and bacterial growth, increasing the life of the filters.
  • Less fogging of glasses.
  • Less contact dermatitis or “mask acne.”
  • More comfort, making mask-wearing less objectionable.

How and when do I OPEN and CLOSE the SMART VALVE?

To OPEN and CLOSE the SMART VALVE is easy and can be done WITHOUT removing the mask.

To OPEN, while wearing the mask, simply rotate the cap to the right, away from your nose, until it stops turning. The valve is then OPEN, and your exhaled air will exit the mask much quicker, directly through the open valve. This will make wearing the mask more comfortable and healthier, so it is better for you. The window will show YELLOW and be at about 12 o’clock. The YELLOW window indicates a hazard to those nearby in case you forgot to CLOSE the valve.

To CLOSE, while wearing the mask, simply rotate the cap to the left, toward your nose, until it stops. The valve is then CLOSED. Your exhaled air will exit the mask more slowly through the filter since the valve is then closed and will be best for those nearby in case you are sick. The window will show GREEN and be at about 3 o’clock. The GREEN window shows people nearby that the valve is CLOSED and that they are safe.

To help you remember which way to turn, turning right is best for you, and turning left is better for others.

How do I change the filters on a PRO or AIR+ mask with a SMART VALVE?

Note that PRO and AIR+ filters are installed in the same way.

Remember to wash your mask when you change the filters.

The SMART VALVE ready PRO and AIR+ filters have a snap ring welded to the inside. The snap ring holds the filter to the SMART VALVE. Open the PRO mask so you can see the inside of the valve. Align the snap ring on the filter to the valve and snap it in place. The valve and snap ring help hold the filter in place while you tuck the filter inside the soft foam liner.

We designed the SMART VALVE so that you can remove it and reuse it when you change the filters mask.  When it’s time to replace the filter, gently pull the SMART VALVE off and repeat the process after you install the new filter.

How do I change the SMART VALVE on the EZ-95 mask?

The EZ-95 filters come with a ring of loop material on the outside of the filter.  The back of the SMART VALVE comes with loop material on the back of the valve. Simply align the SMART VALVE to the hole, and then it easily snaps into the ring inside the filter. The hook and loop keeps the valve from rotating when turning the valve cap from OPEN to CLOSED. The SMART VALVE ready EZ-95 filters have a snap ring welded to the inside. The snap ring holds the filter to the SMART VALVE.

We designed the SMART VALVE so that you can remove it and reuse it on a new EZ-95 mask.  When it’s time to replace the mask, gently pull the SMART VALVE off and replace it with a new EZ-95 mask.

For more information about changing the SMART VALVE on the EZ-95 mask watch our videos below.

What is the Air Quality Index (AQI)?

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is used to report air quality. It tells you how polluted the air is on a scale from 0 to 500.

The index is divided into 6 levels, color-coded from green to maroon. The higher the pollution level, the more damaging it is to your health.

EPA air quality index aqi

You can find the AQI for your city or region by using a smartphone app such as AirVisual.

Can air pollution cause cancer?

Yes, according to the WHO, air pollution causes cancer.

Scientists have known for years that air pollution can lead to lung cancer, but new evidence shows it can also cause other cancers, including breast, liver, and pancreatic cancer.

A new study found that air pollution even increases the risk of getting mouth cancer.

One study revealed that every time the concentration of PM2.5 rises 10 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3), the risk of dying from cancer increases by 22%.

But exactly how does air pollution cause cancer?

Pollution may cause flaws in the function of DNA repair, changes in the immune response of the body, or inflammation that causes angiogenesis, the development of fresh blood vessels that allow tumors to spread.
